'The Faafu Dharanboodhoo Council is the local administrative body responsible for the governance and development of Dharanboodhoo, an inhabited island in the Faafu Atoll (Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi) of the Maldives. The council operates under the Maldives’ decentralized governance system, working to improve infrastructure, public services, and the island's unique cultural heritage. ### Leadership & Administration Council President: Abdul Hameed Adam (currently serving in the 4th term, 2021–2026). Governance Structure: The council consists of elected members who represent the island's interests at both the island and atoll levels. Office Hours: Sunday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. ### Key Responsibilities The council oversees various essential services and development projects, including: Infrastructure: Maintenance of island roads, the harbor, and public lighting. Public Services: Waste management, mosque maintenance, and the administration of the island’s primary health center and pre-school services. Land Management: Issuing land plots, registering buildings, and maintaining the island’s land-use records. Social Development: Organizing religious and national festivals, promoting sports, and managing community centers and parks. Cultural Preservation: Dharanboodhoo is renowned for its traditional lacquerware (Liyelaa Jehun); the council plays a role in documenting and preserving this intangible cultural heritage. ### Recent Priorities (2025–2026) In recent meetings with the national government, the Council has highlighted several urgent development needs for the island: Shore Protection: Addressing coastal erosion to protect the island's land. Education & Facilities: Construction of a multipurpose hall and additional classrooms to manage school overcrowding.
